The Two Zodiacs

Sidereal and tropical, laid over one sky — and the ~24° gap that has divided East and West for a thousand years, held here without a quarrel.

Movement I सिद्धान्त

Siddhānta — the theory

T wo astrologers look at the very same sky on the very same night. One says the Sun is in Aries; the other, just as sure, says it is in Pisces. Neither has made a mistake. They are measuring the sign from two different zero-points — and that single choice of where to begin is the thousand-year quarrel of the two zodiacs.

The West measures from the spring equinox: 0° Aries is the moment the Sun crosses north over the equator, wherever the stars lie. This is the tropical zodiac, sāyana. Jyotiṣa measures from the fixed stars: its Aries begins where the stars of Aries begin. This is the sidereal zodiac, nirayana.

Once, the two zeroes coincided — around the year 285 CE, equinox and stars agreed. But the Earth's axis wobbles, a slow ~26,000-year circle called precession, and it drags the equinox backward against the stars — about 1° every 72 years. Century by century the two Aries drifted apart. Today the gap — the ayanāṁśa — stands near 24°: nearly a whole sign. That is why one Sun answers to two names.

By the lineage's measure (Master E.K. · KPK) the equinox regressed out of Pisces and into the 30th degree of Aquarius in 1837 — counting downward at 72 years per degree: 29° by 1909, 28° by 1981. So the Aquarian Age is already here, near its 27th degree, moving through the Dhaniṣṭhā stars. Entered by the star-clock, though E.K. adds we have not yet entered the full spirit of Aquarius — “it is our awakening that decides our age.”

Note — this constellation-age fixes its boundaries by the lineage's own reckoning (crossing at 1837). The textbook's unequal star-borders put the same crossing near 2600 CE; the disagreement is a disagreement over where to write the zero — the very theme of this lesson. The West chose the equinox on purpose. Bind the zodiac to the seasons and a chart becomes a portrait of when in the year's breath a life set out — the raw push of spring in Aries, the fullness of the summer turn in Cancer. The constellations are lovely, the West says, but they drift; the equinox returns every year, exactly. It let the stars go and kept the living tie between the Earth and its light.

So to the Western eye, saying the Sun is “in Aries” at the equinox is simply true — because for the West, the sign is the season, not the star.

The spiritual reading the turning year

To anchor the zodiac in the equinox is to say the soul's journey is the year's journey — birth at the spring hinge, harvest and release at the autumn and winter turns. Your sign marks where on that eternal wheel your own light first broke.

Jyotiṣa reads the constellation behind the planet. Its rāśis are welded to the fixed stars, and to keep them there it must actively subtract the ayanāṁśa from every measured position — the whole craft is built to stay pinned to the sky's own marks. It has good reason: the nakṣatras, the daśās, the yogas all rest on those stars. Cut the zodiac loose from them and Jyotiṣa's clockwork stops.

So to the Vedic eye, the Sun is “in Mīna” because that is where it truly stands against the great fixed wheel — and the fixed wheel, not the sliding equinox, is what endures.

The spiritual reading the changeless witnesses

To fix the zodiac on the stars is to bow to what does not change. The seasons come and go with the Earth's small tilt; the stars keep their pattern across a life, a dynasty, an age. Jyotiṣa reads a soul against the eternal, not the annual — the karma the fixed heavens have witnessed since long before this birth.

What both skies agree on · the invariants the strong call

Here is the quiet secret. The ayanāṁśa is a single constant subtracted from every body alike. So whatever depends on the difference between two positions does not feel it at all. The angle between two planets — a trine is 120° in both skies. The Moon's phase, which is just the Sun–Moon angle. The houses, counted from the Ascendant. Slide the whole ring of names 24° and none of these move a hair.

Arka builds its firmest calls on exactly these — aspects and phase — because they are frame-free: both crafts compute them identically, without any ayanāṁśa at all.

The sign is the costume held lightly

What does shift with the frame is only the sign-label pinned to each body. Arka takes the nakṣatra as the fixed-star anchor precession never moves, reads the tropical season for temperament and the sidereal rāśi for dignity — and treats the disagreement over the name for what it is: a change of clothes, not a change of body.

The quarrel of the zodiacs sounds cosmic and is, in truth, almost clerical: where do you write the zero? The West writes it at the equinox; Jyotiṣa writes it at the stars; and everything downstream of that one choice — the sign a planet “is in” — inherits the difference. But the sky itself keeps no zero. Arka reads first from what no zero can touch — the angles, the phase — and only then reaches for the sign. It does not need the two zodiacs to agree; it needs only to know which layer of a reading survives the change of frame, and which layer is merely the costume.

Kālacakra — one wheel, and it is first a clock कालचक्र

Before it named characters, the zodiac measured time. The old astronomers graduated one dial from the blink of an eye to the aeon — a cascade in which each measure is built of the one below it:

And upward without end. The siddhāntas state each planet's motion not as degrees per day but as whole revolutions of the wheel across a mahāyuga of 4,320,000 years — Sun 4,320,000 · Moon 57,753,336 · Budha 17,937,060 · Śukra 7,022,376 · Kuja 2,296,832 · Guru 364,220 · Śani 146,568. Divide, and every mean motion falls out of a single grand count.

Wherever you write the zero, the wheel the two zodiacs argue over is first this: a clock, graduated from the blink to the aeon — and a revolution is a revolution in either frame.

Abhyāsa — one sky, two wheels

Here is a single sky wearing both zodiacs at once — the tropical signs on the outer ring, the sidereal signs on the inner. Drag the ☉ Sun and the ☾ Moon and read each body's two names where its spoke crosses the two rings.

Then take the ayanāṁśa slider and pull the gap open from 0° to today's ~24°. Watch the inner ring turn under the bodies — every sign-name slips a whole notch back — and the gold arc widen at the top. That arc is the ayanāṁśa: the angle between the two zodiacs' own first points of Aries — the very gap precession opened in Fig. 1, now read as a single number.

Now the real skill of an Arka reader: for any claim about a chart, ask one question — would it still be true if I switched zodiacs? If the ayanāṁśa moves it, it is a sign-label, held lightly. If it does not, it is an invariant — the firm ground. Read each line and place it.
